Benjamin Hubert’s strategic industrial design agency ‘Layer’ has introduced a new furniture collection which again introduces a new way of bonding fabric textiles together. The new collection introduced for Moroso. Benjamin Hubert is the founder of the design agency Layer and a British industrial designer.
The agency’s latest move includes integrated home ingredients like a table, the sofa has been fixed together using a heat-sealing tape. Benjamin Hubert said that the tape consists of polyurethane rubber used to bond smaller pieces of textile together that would otherwise be discarded in the upholstery process.
Hubert said, “We saw an opportunity to create an upholstered product that is completely waterproof, so it can be used for outdoor use whilst protecting the seams from wear and tear – so the product would last longer too.”
Layer’s new collection is a bit like athleisure for furniture and it was inspired by the tape traditionally used to waterproof. It also protects the seams in sporting goods, snowboarding jackets, and wet-weather gear.
The agency stated, “At Layer, we are always looking at fashion and technology trends in parallel industries. The Tape collection for Moroso is inspired by the technical and aesthetic properties of snowboard jackets, a technique we find fascinating.” Further, it added, “This method of bonding allowed us to highlight how you can use smaller pieces of waste textile to create more sustainable upholstered furniture.”
