On March 25, 2018, a fire killed dozens of people in a shopping mall in Russia. The incident broke out on the top floor of a four-story building in the Siberian city of Kemerovo. officials stated that at least 64 people died in a huge fire, many of them children.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said four individuals have been confined after it had found “serious violations” in its investigation into the blast in the Siberian city of Kemerovo. The head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Vladimir Puchkov stated that around 10 people are still missing, and ten others are in the hospital after the blaze broke out on Sunday afternoon.
Eyewitness Anna Zarechneva said, “It’s just a horror … it’s hard to describe what happened today … it was a normal day off.” Anna had gone to the cinema at the center with her family to watch the movie, Pacific Rim
Anna wrote on Instagram, “Somewhere in the middle of the session the door opened and, in the light, coming from the hall there was a cry: “Fire! Fire!”. Anna said panic almost broke out as individuals endeavored to advance down the stairs to the shouts and cries of kids.
Further, Anna wrote, “Adults fled pushing and crushing children. On the stairs, from time to time, the crowd also panicked, but the men quickly calmed everyone, shouting: “Do not panic! Calm down! We will all go down!”. Someone slipped in a hurry and fell on the steps. But someone immediately helped him get back on his feet.”
Early pictures from the scene demonstrated thick dark smoke pouring from the strip mall. The flames consumed an area of about 1,600 square meters, opened in 2013. The mall contained a cinema hall, bowling alley, children’s center and a petting zoo. The fire brought under control by evening. According to the region’s government, the families of the victim would be paid $17,500.
