Tens of thousands of Americans receive new organs every year. They got a new lease on life with these organs as the ones with they born start to fail. In the year 2016, there were more than 33, 600 transplants, that is the number which has risen by 20 percent in the past five years.
There are much more peoples that are waiting on the transplant list, almost 120, 000 people in total. And it takes sometimes years and they did not get the organ. According to a report, about 8,000 people die every year just because of the wait for the organs. That is the reason that researchers, policymakers, and doctors are finding new ways and strategies to increase the supply of the organs.
The reason behind the shortfall of the organs is that not all the organs which are donated can be used, it needs the standard method and use. There is very little time to get the organ to the recipient in time. The donated organs are mostly by the deceased donors and as the organ available there is very little time to complete the transplant. Because as long as it remains outside the body, the worse it functions.
UNOS is the organization which allocates organs and they are constantly on their way to improve the allocation of organs. And for this, they use a new technique of algorithms. This compares multidimensional and logistical factors, like the patient’s antigens and blood group, and logistical factors such as distance and medical urgency, to match donors to recipients.
The researchers created other ways also to combat the shortfall of the organs and one of them is xenotransplantation. Through this scientist grow organs in other animals that could be worthwhile in humans. Some other are creating artificial organs than can be grown in the lab. They made the organs of different cells and growing them to right size and function so that it can beat the challenge. This will be available in the near future but a lot of work has still needed to be done on this.
